With a membership of 160 countries, the World Trade Organization (WTO) is the international organization with responsibility for the global rules of trade between nations. Its stated principal function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably, and freely as possible. Established almost twenty years ago, the agreements negotiated under its auspices and, indeed, its very existence have been the source of tremendous controversy and debate.

Debra Steger joined the Faculty of Law in 2004 where she teaches and conducts research in the areas of international trade, investment, dispute settlement, international arbitration and the governance of international organizations. Her research is focused on global economic governance with an emphasis on improvement and reform of international economic organizations, international trade and investment agreements, and dispute settlement mechanisms, such as the WTO and investment arbitration.  She currently holds the Hyman Soloway Chair in Business and Trade Law at the University of Ottawa.
