Ton Zuijdwijk

Biography

In 2021-2022, Ton Zuijdwijk will teach courses in International Trade Law (Fall term of 2021) and European Union Law (January term of 2022).

Ton Zuijdwijk is a former General Counsel in the Trade Law Bureau of Global Affairs Canada (and the Department of Justice). In that capacity, he provided legal advice on the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreements and Canada’s Free Trade Agreements, participated in international trade negotiations and litigated cases before WTO Panels and the WTO Appellate Body.  Before the establishment of the Trade Law Bureau, he practised constitutional and international law as a member of the Department of Justice.

Before joining the Department of Justice of Canada, Ton taught law at the University of Leiden (Netherlands) and at McGill University.  He also served in the Legal Office of the United Nations (International Trade Law Branch) in New York and the Transfer of Technology Division of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.  He has been a Part-time Professor at the Faculty of Law (Common Law Section) of the University of Ottawa since 1990.
