Benoit Girardin is President of LBB Consultants (www.lbbconsultants.com), a consulting firm offering solutions in legal affairs and operational and strategic analysis and studies in the sport and entertainment sectors. Mr. Girardin obtained his Licence in Law from the University of Ottawa in 1994, with a specialization in commercial and sport law. He also earned a degree in Physical Education at UQAM in 1988 (specialization in Coaching). He then pursued an Executive MBA at HEC Montréal as well as advanced management training at McGill University’s International Executive Institute with a focus on strategic planning and strategic management.
He is a strategic and business advisor, a trained mediator and sport arbitrator and represents professional and amateur athletes as well as national and international sports organizations and entertainment companies such Cirque du Soleil. Over the years, he practiced business and sport law, was CEO of a national multi-services sport organization, has created and presided over a private company specialized in the management of sport centres, high performance sport programs and the organization of national and international sport events. In this capacity, he has successfully organized and directed more than 20 national and international sport events. Mr. Girardin has been a Certified Level 4 NCCP Coach and has coached players internationally with Tennis Canada on international ATP and WTA tours.
Mr. Girardin has been an active member of the Canadian Olympic Committee since 2001 and acted as member of the Mission Staff as Athlete Ombudsperson for the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He acted as legal counsel for Canadian athletes and the Canadian Olympic Committee before the Court of Arbitration for Sport during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. In such capacity, Mr Girardin had many dealings with the IOC, IFs and NOCs. He is a member of the 2009 COC Governance and Ethics committee.
As CEO of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC), Mr. Girardin has negotiated and collaborated with a full range of national and international federations on sport issues. Among others, he has helped the settlement and resolution of many cases related to sponsorship, doping, governance and contracts. He is one of the founders of the SDRCC and was its first executive director, from 2003 to 2007. He also participated in the development of the Physical Activity and Sport Act (adopted as part of the Canadian Sport Policy) through representations before the Senate committee.
In his legal practice, he has acted in many mandates involving financing, Merger & Acquisition, corporate due diligence reviews, insurance and risk management, Intellectual Property, transactional and contract law and sport law. He is a member of the Quebec Bar Association, the Canadian Association of Law Professors, the Sports Lawyer Association and the International Sport Lawyer Association. He is an accredited negotiator of the Stitt Feld Handy Group, a member of the Canadian Society of Association Executives, was a volunteer member of the Board of Governors for the annual Sport Québec gala, a member of the Sport Matters Group and was a member of the task force on ethics in sport for Coaches of Canada.
