Response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action

Posted on Monday, June 29, 2015

The Common Law Section welcomes the TRC’s Call to Action.

The Common Law Section is already committed to “indigenizing” its curriculum through inclusion of Indigenous Law within its course offerings.   Other initiatives include a mandatory summer course in Aboriginal Legal traditions for the students in the “Programme de droit canadien” (PDC), the possibility of a specialization in Aboriginal Law and Indigenous Legal Traditions, a pro-active admissions policy for Indigenous students, a first-year thematic course in  "Aboriginal Legal Mechanisms” and extensive graduate law courses.

The Call for Action invites us to consider additional initiatives and we are committed to responding pro-actively on the issue.  The Common Law Section considers that no legal education is complete without the knowledge of the history of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada and welcomes the opportunity to continue to deepen its commitment to excellence in legal education through an enriched offering in Indigenous law.
