Common Law’s Professor Elizabeth Sheehy, Professor Michael Geist and Professor Allan Rock have all been appointed to the Order of Ontario, the province's highest honour, awarded to Ontarians for excellence and achievement in any field.
Recipients of the Order of Ontario are deemed to have made significant contributions in the areas of education, arts, community and public service, science and medicine, citizenship and multiculturalism, business, or sports. Those invested into the Order are held in the highest esteem as examples of excellence for all Ontarians. Professors Sheehy, Geist and Rock are among 23 new appointees to the Order.
For over three decades Elizabeth Sheehy has been a prominent Canadian voice on legal responses to violence against women. Her pioneering research into the law’s treatment of women has helped to transform the criminal justice system, creating more effective protection for victims of sexual and domestic violence. She has fought for a systemic overhaul of our legal, political, educational, and media institutions, and conducted sweeping studies of every aspect of the intersection of law and violence against women. No other scholar in Canada demonstrates her range and breadth of knowledge.
Michael Geist has dedicated his exemplary career to championing the public interest and has pioneered and popularized the field of law and technology in Canada, obtaining international recognition in doing so. Through his research, outreach and volunteer work, he represents the interests of Canadians, defending online human rights such as freedom of speech, and urging citizens to become actively engaged in government policy. His tireless advocacy and dedication to the public interest has exceptionally benefitted Ontarians and all Canadians.
Allan Rock spent ten years as a member of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien’s Cabinet, holding various senior portfolios: Minister of Justice and Attorney General (1993-1997); Minister of Health (1997-2002) and Minister of Industry and Minister of Infrastructure (2002-2003). He left Parliament in 2003 upon his appointment as Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations in New York, where he was deeply involved in humanitarian, peace-building and development efforts, particularly in Africa, Haiti and Sri Lanka. As President of the University of Ottawa, Allan Rock worked with faculty, students and administrative personnel to advance the four objectives in Destination 2020, the University’s strategic plan.
Along with the other new appointees, Professors Sheehy, Geist and Rock will be presented with their Order of Ontario insignia by Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, at an investiture ceremony at Queen’s Park on February 27, 2018.
Congratulations to Professor Sheehy, Professor Geist and Professor Rock!
