Professor Michael Geist was honoured on November 29 by the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), which selected him as the recipient of its 2018 Vox Libera Award.
The Vox Libera is awarded to a Canadian individual or organization that has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the principles of free expression and has had made an important and sustained contribution—at home or abroad—to those same principles. Among his many accomplishments, Professor Geist was recognized for his role in the fight against the 2007 legislation that sought to incorporate the worst aspects of the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act into Canadian law; his leadership in the fight against Bill C-51 and C-31; his efforts to oppose the dangerous Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement; and his sustained commitment to leading the charge to maintain net neutrality against lobbying from Canada’s largest telecoms.
Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE) monitors, defends and reports on free expression and access to information in Canada and abroad. Rooted in the field of journalism, CJFE promotes a free media as essential to a fair and open society.
The award was presented at 21st Annual CJFE Gala, which took place at the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto.
Congratulations to Professor Geist!
