Common Law Alumnus Jay Hennick (LL.B. 1981, D.U. 2014) Named 2019 Horatio Alger Award Recipient

Faculty of Law, Common Law alumnus Jay S. Hennick (LL.B. 1981, D.U. 2014) has been named the recipient of the 2019 International Horatio Alger Award. The award, which includes lifetime membership in the Association, is presented to outstanding Canadians who have achieved great success despite personal and professional adversity.


Mr. Hennick was honoured for his achievements at the 2nd Annual Horatio Alger Association of Canada Excellence Gala on October 30, 2018 in Toronto.


Established in 2009, the Horatio Alger Association of Canada is a charitable organization dedicated to the simple but powerful belief that hard work, honesty and determination can conquer all obstacles. The Association honours the achievements of outstanding individuals who have achieved great success in spite of adversity, and who encourage young people to pursue their dreams through higher education.


Mr. Hennick is the Global Chairman and CEO of Colliers International, one of the world’s largest and fastest growing commercial real estate service firms, as well as the Founder and Chairman of FirstService Corporation, a North American leader in the essential property services sector.


He has enjoyed a successful career as a corporate lawyer, and has given generously to the community through the Hennick Family Foundation, which he established with his wife Barbara. The Foundation supports causes in health care and education, including: The Jay Hennick JD - MBA Program at the University of Ottawa; The Hennick Family Wellness Gallery at The Mount Sinai Hospital; and, The Hennick Centre of Business and Law, a joint program of Osgoode Hall Law School and the Schulich School of Business in Toronto.


He was named Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year in 1998 and CEO of the Year by Canadian Business Magazine in 2001.
