Professor Carissima Mathen has been awarded the University of Ottawa’s 2017 Excellence in Media Relations Award for English Commentary.
The Excellence in Media Relations Award acknowledges professors who have successfully commented on hot topics in a timely fashion. An expert in public law, Professor Mathen is one of the country’s most well-known and highly-regarded legal commentators. Deeply committed to making law accessible to Canadians, Professor Mathen routinely makes complex legislative and judicial decisions understandable to a wide and professionally untrained audience, helping to improve the quality of public debate across the country.
Professor Mathen’s media work in recent years includes interventions on some of the most critical legal issues in Canada, including sexual assault, physician-assisted dying, Senate reform, trial delays, the legalization of marijuana, and freedom of expression on social media.
Professor Mathen shares this honour with Patrick Leblond of the Faculty of Social Sciences, who is recognized for his commentary in French.
Congratulations to Professor Mathen on this well-deserved award!
