The Faculty of Law, Common Law Section is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Lynn Rockman as Coordinator, Family Law Program at the Faculty. In this capacity, Professor Rockman will coordinate existing Family Law programming within the Faculty as well as develop a plan to expand opportunities and offerings for our students. She will work with faculty members in both the English and the French programs as well as members of the bar and the bench.

Professor Rockman has extensive experience in private practice devoted exclusively to family law. She articled and worked as an associate lawyer at what is now Gowlings LLP in Ottawa from 1988 to 1992 and then continued her practice in a local boutique firm until 2012. Professor Rockman had the honour of being selected by her peers for inclusion in the The Best Lawyers in Canada (Family Law) for several consecutive years of her practice. Professor Rockman was a lecturer and seminar instructor at the Law Society of Ontario’s Bar Admission course and continues to be a guest speaker at various family law continuing legal education programs.

Professor Rockman has been teaching at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa since the fall of 2010. She teaches several courses in the areas of family law and dispute resolution. Professor Rockman is also involved in the school’s mooting program through her coaching of the Walsh Negotiation Competition team and organizing an annual family law negotiation competition event sponsored by Borden Ladner Gervais LLP.

“There is a strong demand for Family Law programming amongst our students. There is also a pressing need for new family law lawyers and strong support from the Ottawa bar and bench to support our students and new lawyers. There is a serious access to justice crisis in Family Law in this country and I believe this is an area where uOttawa can be a leader. I am confident that Professor Rockman will provide the necessary leadership, vision and energy to help position uOttawa as a leader in Canada in Family Law.”
