In a simulated meeting of the UN Security Council, virtually convened on 15 November 2021, Common Law students passed a resolution, making a series of recommendations to the international community to help the people of Afghanistan at the time of catastrophe. The unanimously passed SC resolution (S/RES/2606 (2021)) covers, inter alia, helping the people of Afghanistan, the role of the United Nations, the question of representation of Taliban in the United Nations, and the UN sanctions on Taliban.
The 14th edition of the annual Nelligan Law First Year Moot Court Competition was held on November 13-15, 2021. Over 140 first-year students in the English Program competed in the preliminary rounds, held on the morning of November 13. The 1L students were divided into hearings with two appellant counsel facing off against two respondent counsel. In a competition first, all hearings were held online, allowing 57 judges from across Canada and abroad (including one in London, England!) to judge.
On November 12, 2021, Mayor Jim Watson revealed this year’s inductees to the Order of Ottawa. Among the 15 names were two proud uOttawa Common Law alumni: Dr. Danielle Lussier, LLB ‘07, LLM ’08, Law PhD ’21 and Daljit S. Nirman, LLM ’02. This award recognizes exceptional residents who have made important contributions that benefit of the citizens of Ottawa. Mayor Watson calls the inductees “remarkable individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the lives of those in our community through their professional accomplishments.”

During the 11th year of partnership with United Nations, Common Law students have recently completed the preparation of 5 additional studies for the Repertory of the Practice of the United Nations Organs.
A team of three Common Law JD candidates for 2022, Ayushi Dave, Ritesh Kotak, and Ryan Mosoff, has won the Harley Finkelstein Entrepreneurship Challenge! The competition, endowed by Harley Finkelstein, joint J.D. & MBA, ‘09 and President of Shopify, was designed to develop the entrepreneurial mindset that is critical to leadership, helping students to become better leaders, lawyers, and entrepreneurs.
The Faculty of Law Common Law Section is pleased to welcome Gladys Osien, JD '19, as Black Legal Mentor in Residence for 2021-22. She will be working with the Black Law Students’ Association to support their activities for the upcoming year.
