Professor Adam Dodek has earned a Connection Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) for a conference entitled “CANADA 150: Constitution 150 – Patriation and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”
2017 marks the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Constitution and the 35th anniversary of the patriation of the Constitution and the enactment of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Constitution 150 is a year-long national collaboration between the University of Ottawa's Public Law Group, the Université de Montréal, the University of Alberta's Faculty of Law celebrating the Canadian Constitution. It is a multi-pronged project involving scholars, youth, policy makers and the public.
Taking place from March 15-17, 2017, Professor Dodek’s will bring together leading constitutional scholars, emerging scholars, students, the media, public servants, members of civil society and community groups. The theme of the event is “The Charter and Emerging Issues in Constitutional Rights and Freedoms: From 1982 to 2032”. The title is intended to capture the forward-looking nature of the endeavour. The event, focused on Patriation, is the first of three Constitution 150 events in 2017, to be followed by Confederation (Montreal, May 2017) and Reconciliation (Edmonton, September 2017).
This event is an innovative collaboration between one of Canada's leading groups of academics studying public law, the University of Ottawa's Public Law Group, and the Centre for Constitutional Studies, the Université de Montréal and the Ottawa Law Review.
Funding for this symposium will come from a subset of SSHRC’s Connection Grants program, called Connecting for Canada’s 150th, which aims to support events and outreach activities that underscore the contributions that social sciences and humanities research has made to Canadian society over the course of the last 150 years. In addition to the money he is receiving from SSHRC, Professor Dodek will also receive funding from the Common Law Section and uOttawa’s Conference/Workshop on Campus Opportunity (CWCO).
Congratulations to Professor Dodek!
