For the second year in a row, the Common Law teams swept the competition at the Walsh Negotiation Competition in Family Law held in Toronto this year on March 11 and 12. After three rounds of grueling competition, the team’s members, Emily Balment, Vinayak Ethiraju, Sydney Lloyd and Daria Vodova, advanced to the finals by achieving the highest scores against ten other teams from law schools across the province.
Our team won the top awards in every category: the 1st place team award went to Daria and Vinayak, the 2nd place team award to Emily and Sydney, while Daria also won 1st place for Most Outstanding Student. Her colleague, Emily, claimed 2nd place Most Outstanding Student, whereas Daria and Vinayak came up with Best Representation Plan.
Coach Lynn Rockman said she is particularly proud of the students for maintaining the highest ethical standards and level of professionalism throughout the competition. “Our students exhibited advanced communication and negotiations skills and they were accomplished team players”, stated Rockman.
Borden Ladner Gervais LLP was instrumental in uOttawa team’s success by providing sponsorship, mentoring and training.
The Walsh Competition is named after Justice George Walsh of the Superior Court of Justice, who was very involved in family law reform and alternative dispute resolution.
Congratulations to the proud winners and to Prof. Rockman!
